Sustainability at KUBAL

At KUBAL, our responsibility extends beyond production itself. As Sweden’s only primary aluminium smelter, we want to contribute to a more sustainable industry and a strong local community. Through renewable energy, best available process technology and continuous improvements, we work to produce aluminium with low climate impact and high resource efficiency.

Our sustainability work

We work systematically with sustainability across environmental, social and governance matters. We follow international guidelines and principles for responsible business conduct and work continuously to strengthen transparency, accountability and sustainable development across our entire business.

Reduced environmental impact

Environmental impact

KUBAL works systematically to reduce the environmental impact of aluminium production through energy efficiency, technological development and continuous process improvements.

Social responsibility

KUBAL respects internationally recognised human rights and works to maintain a safe, secure and inclusive workplace. We strive for good working conditions and a working environment where everyone is treated equally and with respect.

Corporate Governance

Corporate governance

KUBAL works with clear structures for governance, transparency and accountability across the entire business. Our framework is based on certified management systems, transparent reporting and established processes.

Our road to net zero emissions

We have a clear ambition to transition to a more low-carbon industry and achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

By reducing the climate impact of our production processes, developing circular solutions and making use of existing resources, we actively contribute to the green transition.

Follow our journey towards more low-carbon aluminium production.

Environmental improvements over time

1942

Fossil-free energy from the start

Access to hydropower was crucial when aluminium production was established in Sundsvall. From the very beginning, the operation was built on renewable electricity – a foundation that still shapes KUBAL’s low climate footprint today.

2008-2010

New technology, lower emissions

A technological shift was carried out when Søderberg technology was replaced with prebaked anodes. The result was higher productivity, improved energy efficiency and sharply reduced emissions by 50–100% – an important step towards modern and more sustainable production.

2019-2021

ASI certification & quality management

Certification under the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) confirmed a structured and responsible way of working focused on sustainability, transparency and accountability throughout the value chain. The introduction of IATF 16949 strengthened work on quality, traceability and continuous improvement, particularly for deliveries to demanding industrial sectors.

2020

Climate and efficiency in focus

A clearer focus on energy efficiency, emissions reduction and data-driven improvements was integrated into both daily operations and the long-term strategy.

2023-2024

Circular investments

Major investments were made in induction heating for anodes, new gas treatment in the cast house and a modern remelting facility. These investments strengthen circularity and contribute to a climate footprint below 4 kg CO₂e per kilo of aluminium – well below the global average.

2025 and beyond

A digital and sustainable future

Continued investments in new technology, digitalisation, process optimisation and preventive maintenance that strengthen energy efficiency, stability and transparency in production.
