Meet Mats Andersson, CEO of KUBAL
From Summer Job to CEO
A Summer Job That Became a Career
When Mats Andersson joined KUBAL at the age of 18, it was not the start of a planned career. It was a summer job—his first step into working life.
Today, more than three decades later, he is CEO of Kubikenborg Aluminium AB in Sundsvall, leading Sweden’s only primary aluminium smelter. His journey reflects how knowledge and responsibility develop over time in an industry where everything begins close to the production process.
He describes the beginning without exaggeration. The plan was to work over the summer and then move on. At the end of the summer, he was offered a permanent position. At the same time, military service awaited, and the security of having a job to return to led him to stay. Over time, the job became more than temporary—it became a long-term career.
He still clearly remembers his first shifts in the production hall the heat, the noise and the level of concentration required. “You quickly learn that every step affects the whole process.” His experience from production has shaped his leadership approach. “The knowledge is on the shop floor.” Those performing the work understand best how to do it safely and efficiently.
In an aluminium smelter, stability is critical. When the process runs well, work becomes safer, energy use more predictable and results more consistent. Safety is built on a culture of openness and collaboration. “If you ask why people stay here long-term, many would give the same answer: their colleagues.”
In the 1990s, Mats moved into leadership roles. Curiosity about improvement became a key driver. When opportunities arise, you need to take responsibility.
As CEO, his role now involves a broader perspective. It includes overseeing operations, safety, investments, energy and competence development. At the same time, the foundation remains the same: stable processes and skilled people.
KUBAL is Sweden’s only primary aluminium smelter and a key industrial player in the region. A major milestone came in 2008 when the electrolysis process was upgraded to modern prebake technology. This reduced emissions and strengthened competitiveness. Sustainable aluminium production is also about daily operations—stable processes, energy efficiency and systematic safety work.
Looking ahead, the future is as much about competence as it is about technology. Knowledge must be transferred between generations to ensure continued development. His own journey began with a summer job and shows how a long-term career in the aluminium industry can grow over time.
